How have you installed VMware server? From rpm or from sources ? I have succeeded only using the rpm. If you have a firewall, you need to open two ports for VMware server.
I installed it using rpm.
VMware-server-2.0.0-122956.x86_64
I'm running 64 bit version of the OS
I am running both x86_64 and 32. I found my problem with network. When I installed 11.1 the network card changed from eth0 to eth_s0_0. So I now have everything working well in both 32 and 64. I did both rpm and source. Although I prefer the rpm. It does work. You need to look at your error messages. You might need to install additional software.
