I've spent the last few weeks getting my SuSE box up and running, with a fair amount of success.
However, there is one annoying detail which I would very much like to have fixed, if only I knew how. The issue I'm talking about is that I've been unable to get my system to behave well at a resolution of 1024x768 or higher; the most I've gotten is 800x600 at 16 bit color depth. 1024x768 gives a nasty 'snow' phenomenon which makes my desktop unworkable. What's strange is that under M$ Windows I can get 1024x768 at 8 or 16 bit color depth as well as 1280x1024 at 8 bit color depth (the latter though only at 60 Hz).
Some of my system's details: SiS5597 video card xfree86 version 3.3.4 SVGA X server SuSE 6.2 kernel 2.2.10
Does anyone on this list have any experience with SiS cards? What is the highest resolution which I should expect to get with this system? How can I fix this problem?
I am going to beat Jon Pennington to the punch..and say " Get rid of the SiS card " these cards are some of the worse garbage every produced. You can get a nice Riva TNT based card for under $100..or go with an S3 based card which should preform well. I am sorry to tell you this, but I have seen nothing but bad posts about the cards here for a long time..and my buddy who is on an NT list says they bitch just about as much about these cards.
hope this helps.. -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ---------------------------------------------------- Once you get them running, you stay right on top of them, and that way a small force can defeat a large one every time. - General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
