T, Redistribution of software that requires no compiling comes to mind too. For instance, compressed packages to be distributed (sprayed via a utility called pkgadd) on your hard drive instead of manually compiling everytime you want to try a new application for Linux. If compiling needs to be done--- automate that too by asking simple questions about the user's config and carrying out methods accordingly. Packaged applications that can be installed on any Linux/Unix distrib is a dream but this dream should be considered along with your "remote autocompile kernel dream". We all know we have to set our goals HIGH for a little SUCCESS. BTW, I've started on a few STATIC/semi-dynamic software packages as you receive this message. Recommendations are appreciated. Read the back of the book dude ... mockers all wind up in the lake of fire .... LOL
Seriously though, the nice thing about it is that you can have some precompiled kernels for download that are just like what the distributors are shipping, in fact that's a cool idea John - you include some pages with stock kernels from the various distributors, such as Slack, Debian, Red Hat, SuSE ... then people can also have a handy resource for install diskettes, etc... put some LILO tutorials and such on the site ...
As far as support goes, it's just like any other linux effort. This imaginary - but deluxe site - would be a good idea to put a majordomo on it and let it support itself like any other newsgroup or list like this one at SuSE. SuSE's advantage would be to have this list as well as a separate list for the kernel compiler site.
The kind of traffic this thing would bring would become a major resource on the net.
Great idea John ...
-tks-
