Dunno if it's still true, but back in the old days of SUNOS (pre-Solaris) if forced into a command prompt, after failed boot, vi was about the only tool available to fix things (the copy for root was statically linked at compile time so it didn't require any outside help). Saved my bacon more than a few times.
It is SO funny (and a bit strange) to read this here since 4.1.x was my "daily driver" until Linux (1.x) caught my eye. :) I miss those days. Thanks for this memory! Carl
