It shows the speaker icon combined with the app that's accessing the soundcard. So also a paused Youtube video on Facebook etc., chat-programs with video/audio capabilities FF52 also shows a speaker icon if you've set its preferences correctly. It shows when a page loads that wants to play sound, but you've told FF not to permit sound without explicit permission. Nothing to do with the desktop at all.
