Well, StarOffice has install options for standalone and net installation. The net installation is what you want! :-) So, maybe you can also choose between standalone or net as well as with OpenOffice. I don't know it by sure because I never installed OpenOffice but StarOffice.
OO does not give the choice. I have installed version 638c on SuSE 7.2. Installation went apparently faultless. Problem though: how to start OO. "soffice" instruction is unknown.
