The conditions under which that is helpful are limited. It may be that an application is asking the display layer that Xorg uses to do something pernicious. It may be that your video driver has a syndromic bug. So... What display hardware/driver do you use? If you use KDE, then systemsettings -> Desktop effects use the 'advanced' tab The first two options let you alter how the kwin layer works. openGL vs raster and Qt graphics being native or raster. Presumably similar exists for Gnome. I can't say what combination works for who/what/when. its a YMMV thing.
