And now, imo, it's time to try WvDial. Go to: <A HREF="http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/"><A HREF="http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/</A">http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial/</A</A>> and DL the source (SRC) code file. Follow the instructions in Install, and you'll be all set.
WvDial virtually automates your entire ppp-dialup process from identifying the modem to setting an optimized init string. All you need to do is enter 3 pieces of information: you ISP's phone number; your username; and password.
And another option is to try X-ISP, which automates dialup quite nice also. This is a GUI app using XFORMS. Head to <A HREF="http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/"><A HREF="http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/</A">http://users.hol.gr/~dbouras/</A</A>> & download the latest, edit the makefile as needed. (I'll be happy to send mine.), make and make install. type XISP as su root and enter your ISP's info. Very nice.
