BTW, I fully agree with your post. I have already got two copies of SuSE's 5.2 demo disk. I've tried out the product and like what I see so much so that I would like to install the full retail version on a new system. I, like you, have no interest in wasting my time downloading GB's of applications from SuSE's website. SuSE have done an excellent job with their distribution and I intend to pay my $$$ and take advantage of this fact. $34.95 for the package IS an outstanding value. In fact, it's an amazing price for such functionality. My whole point is that I believe SuSE's pricing discourages people late in the version cycle from buying. Paying the full street price for the complete package now and then paying again in a few weeks another amount equal to the full street price is expecting a lot. The real problem is that SuSE's authorized agents have discounted the product in such a way as to nullify SuSE's subscription program. Gerry On 18-Jul-98 Michael Lankton wrote:
Hmmm. I had written this really eloquent, scathing flame, which I then fortunately deleted. I like Phillip's approach much better, and he makes several good points. $34.95 represents an outstanding value for the bundle, compared to other distributions of linux, not to mention that in other os'es software with equal functionality would set you back in the thousands. I too like SuSE, so much so that I would pay more, and that I spend my personal time in an effort to be helpful to others (hopefully) in this forum. I have also used other dists, and this is precisely why my love for SuSE is so profound. There is no other dist that is more polished out of the box, more well thought out, more comprehensive a collection of applications, is perfect for newbie or guru, or better support in the linux world. But I would say that, I'm a SuSE linux user.

I subscribe because it's easier to let SuSE do the work of
collecting
the latest LINUX system and application software than to do it myself. For me this service is easily worth the extra cash. It may not be worth it for others.
<self-righteousness> I also have a private motive to subscribe. I like the SuSE distribution. I've used Slackware and Red Hat and have tried Caldera; I prefer SuSE and want to make certain that the fine folks at SuSE know this to encourage them to continue producing this fine distribution. I also want to make certain that do what I can afford to support the whole idea of Open Systems.
