Debugging Thunderbird Connections?

Hi Folks, I'm having issues with Thunderbird on Leap 15.5 when connecting to a smtp server.  TB returns a rather unhelpful error message.  Is there any way to turn on a debug mode in TB?  I unfortunately don't have access to the logs on the server side.  There's always tcpump and wireshark, but there must be an easier way.
