I've been a SuSE'r for well what 4 years, ever since 6.0 and I have always sused Vanilla kernels, the only thing I like about using the SuSE 8.0 Kernel is they have patched the hell out of it to support practically every type of hardware. They have also added many feature enhancements. Doing this on yoru own would be a pain. Since the 8.0 Kernel is fairly up to date I think it would be better to use it that vanilla kernel. The only reason I would move up is if you need a recent kernel feature.
