Mike, Using 11.2, you can put a custom menu bar on to the panel. This will give you the more traditional "Applications ... Places ... System" to access your menu items. Simply right click on the panel and look for "Menu Bar - A custom menu bar". I assume you can then edit the menu to display similar to Ubuntu if you want to.
