In my mind 50 GByte - 100 GByte are more than enough for a root file system, where usually nothing happens but a little writing to and from /tmp and /var/tmp.
There are excellent reasons to have /tmp and /var each on separate file system/partitions,
Not when you use btrfs. You need them on the same partition for snapshots to work.
No you don't Even using BtrFS you can have the snapshot mechanism with/on different file systems. If you look at the config file (or read the man page in detail) you'll see there is a file under /etc/snapper/configs/ for each volume. There's also, in a parallel directory, a template, to show you how it can be done. See also: SNAPPER-CONFIGS(5) But, as I say, if you use LVM you can use snapper on any file system, ext[234], xfs, reiserfs, by means of 'thin volumes.
