You were right! After I updated BIOS to F12B, it powered down normally first time for last a couple of years. I never suspected because when I mounted Ubuntu drive on the same machine about a year ago, it powered down as expected. I guess OpenSuSE uses different BIOS features/options from ones Ubuntu uses.
