You should check to see if you are supposed to be starting in graphical mode or command line mode. Look in the inittab to see if you are going to run level 3 or 5 grep id: /etc/inittab If you see id:5:initdefault: Then you need to figure out what is wrong with gdm or kdm. Whenever I turn-on my computer, my newly installed OpenSuSE 10.3 is prompting me to login (black and white screen) instead of the green coloured KDE login screen. The only way I can do is to login with root account and then key-in the command "kdm", then the system will show me the KDE login screen. Then I can use the system after this login.
