I've had this error crop up on 4 completely different machines at work including my own workstation. I've spent hours trying to figure out what is causing this. My workstation the office worked fine since 8.0 was released/put on the machine. Then I upgraded via apt a couple XFree pkgs and everything died. I reverted back to the previous version of those X pkgs and it still craps. The 4 machines I've had this issue on are only simular in the fact that they are X86 based..a dell laptop, a dual PII400 machine, a Compaq Deskpro and a Sony Vaio desktop. I've had it with nVidia's drivers. I went out and bought an ATI Radeon 7500 a couple weeks ago for my home work station and Thursday for my office workstation. I've had absolutely no problems with them. They have GLX and DRI enabled with no effort on my part SaX2 did it for me..and they just work. I would give thought to replacing the nVidia card. More trouble then it's worth..and the Radeon 7500 has 4X the ram and speed that then TNT card has..and the cost is about $55 USD. * Andreas Daskalopoulos (daskalious@softhome.net) [020824 13:01]: :: ::XFree86 Startup Protocol File :: ::XFree86 Version 4.2.0 / X Window System ::(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) ::Release Date: 23 January 2002 ::If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is ::newer than the above date, look for a newer version before ::reporting problems.
