Just out of curiousity, where did you hear that we see a light shade as >foreground? We have been using white paper with black letters for >centuries.

Have you ever tried making black paper and white ink ?? It is true, light colours are seen as foreground (yellow is best) and blue makes the best background for ease of reading. This is due to the human eye's varying response across the visible frequency range of light. We are almost blue-blind in comparison to other colours and yellow has a very narrow response peak - so contrast is maximised. If you spend a lot of time at a screen then light on dark is much easier on the eyes. It ia an intriguing subject when you look into it. Hope this helps.
