I think you're missing the point of subfs. You say 'only root could mount' but the whole idea is that you don't have to mount. Or, rather, it's mounted on demand. Just pop the floppy in and start using it. In 9.1 subfs had some problems, but in 9.2 and 9.3 I haven't had any problems worth mentioning I'm not sure what a 'protocol drive' is. Could you give us the exact error message?
