Does it work ok in Gnome? Or Ximian code?

Matt, It was working OK with timidity. Right now I have it hosed up again. I tried lying to YaST about having the ALSA RPM installed. I had removed the ALSA RPM and installed the latest release from my own build. That seemed to work. Since I had also built the 2.4.1 kernel modules I tried to remove them with a new build of the kernel. Now I have no sound. The problem with the KDE2.1b2 seems to be related to its looking for certain devices using certain aliases. There also seems to be some missing files on my system which the KDE2.1b2 components expect to find. I really don't have a clue how sound works. I don't even know how to check to see if all the different midi ports, synthesizers, and sound ports are working correctly. I don't even know what they are supposed to do for me. If you, or anybody, knows were to find a good description of what sound devices do, I'd be happy to know about it. I don't want the detailed schematics of the card. I just want a quick description of what the different components do. What is AWE? What is MIDI? What does the SB16 part of my sound card do? I suspect this is not all that hard to understand, I just never took the time to weed through all the technical stuff to get the general overview. What I have found either assumes I already know what these things are, or tries to explain to me in excruciating detail how the digital to analog conversion works. Either that or it tells me that this stuff makes my computer sound really cool. Oh well, I'd better get back to reading up on modules so I can at least understand how to configure them. Steve
