I have had issues with the 2.4.19 8.0 system since the kernel was installed. Several are mentioned in the 8.1 threads. This morning I found the system locked up. On reboot the USB keyboard had to be unplugged and replugged to enter the password. It worked fine until the login screen.
I am willing to placed my money on the 2.4.19 kernel being the culprit.
My experiences also suggest this. Since upgrading (by a fresh install and restoring /home and data) from 8.0 (with self built kernel) to 8.1 my system locked solid (with the disk light solid on) three times in the first day. I downloaded and installed kernel 2.4.20-pre10 from kernel.org and since then it has worked without a problem. Though it could be something to do with my hardware as I had the same problem with the SuSE supplied kernel when I installed 8.0.
