And don't ever try to delete contents of that directory whilst simultaneously viewing them with Dolphin / Konqueror in Preview Mode. You will become stuck in an inexhaustible loop of despair, where every deleted thumbnail will have become recreated at the moment of selecting it for deletion. In this circumstance, use the command line, or turn off both tooltips and image previews in Dolphin / Konqueror.

I have never tried to delete the thumbnails while using Dolphin so will take your word for the consequences. To delete them I always use mc, select all the files in each category using the '+' option and then pressing F8. BC -- A civilisation is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable.
