Strictly speaking there only needs to be one copy of spamd the parent process. :-) HA HA. See how Apache works and wonder how many 'parent' copies you want to be able to deal with various incoming mail streams. I'm the only user of my system, and mail comes in via fetchmail+procmail and procmail invoking spamc, only one source at a time, so having only one parent process and only one child at a time (-max-children) is all I need. YMMV.
There is one parent, and several children when needed, up to a maximum of 8. I allow several children because some of the network based tests seem to need up to 6 seconds, as spammed waits for an answer and doing nothing all that time. So, when processing a bunch of email from this email list, say 50, it took a long time to do. Having several children waiting speeds things a lot. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
