[SLE] Pointing to so-called "missing" files?

Hello, How can one ensure that libraries, modules, etc are located when compiling an app? Periodically, when compiling an error appears, reporting that a file, etc, cannot be located. However, the file does exist - just not where the compiler expects it to be. Can I use symbolic links to resolve this problem?
