Hello Edward
I also have a cable modem for Telenet-Belgium. I think the principal is the
same.
The Cable modem has to be plugged in to a network card to work.
This network card has to be configured to use DHCP to get an address and DNS
information from the ISP server. (do this via yast).
You cannot do this (at least with my ISP):
- have the modem on the HUB, and let all boxes connect to the net.
why:
- For my ISP, the modem needs the MAC address of the network card, the DHCP
server locks on that for an hour
- You cannot have an entire LAN get a DHCP address from your ISP, not only would
they not be able to reach each other, but they'd also have the same IP!
I have things set up like this.
- All machines on my LAN have a fixed IP
- The cable modem is connected to a server (Pentium 120) to ethernet card 0
with DHCP
- The server and all machines are connected to the HUB.
- The server runs a firewall to protect my network, and does routing and masquerading.
- Each client on the network has the server's internal IP as default gateway.
That's it! If you need further help, please let me know.
Kind regards
Guy

work.
