By way of elaboration: If i install freshly off of 8.1 disks, everything works except for DMA on my ide hard drives and atapi cd rom.
I assume you tried hdparm to enable it?
If I then run YOU update, my 3com NIC stops working, and the nvidia drivers, if set to enable 3d acceleration, crash the computer.
As far as nvidia, that's a dead end, in my opinion. The suse update of the kernel for 8.1 broke or changed something that makes nvidia to fail. Either remove the update - which solved hard crashes on machines using reiserfs - or upgrade to suse 8.2. As to the NIC, I have no idea.
The involved devices are detected normally and appear on lspci, as well as having the correct modules picked out automatically. I don't know if DMA works, because before trying it, I downgraded back to the stock kernel. I may try this all over again.
If I do a fresh install of 8.2 i experience the same problems as if I had updated the 8.1 using YOU, and updating the 8.2 using YOU obviously does not change anything. DMA runs swimmingly with 8.2 however.
Ok, so I understand that on 8.2 nvidia doesn't work (I mean the nvidia driver, 3d et al), and also your NIC. Also I understand that the unpatched 8.2 doesn't work with the nvidia driver.
I have tried recompiling the nvidia drivers using their package from the website, and ran into the same problem. Basically either the system freezes at the white nvidia splash screen, or a black frozen screen is produced. This happens after using SAX to change to 3d acceleration.
Typical... :-(
Sorry if this is something obvious that i'm missing. Thanks in advance for any help!
Well, I would set up the system with the updated 8.2. Then, I would post two questions here about the NIC and another about the nvidia. Well, no, first search at least the last two months of this list mail for the word "nvidia", because there are TONS of messages about it. Some of them may apply to your case. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
