If you're running XFree86 v 4.x try /etc/X11/XF86Config (you don't need an /etc/XF86Config at all ).
You looked in /etc/X11/ any way just to make sure right? :-)
Um, because the machine in question is running SuSE 7.0, which seems to be lacking Sax2.
?? Is it installed (I can't remember if Sax2 came with 7.0 or not) - have you checked to see if it's on your CDs for installation?
My 7.1 machines took very nicely to posted snippets of config for wheelmice ;-), but this one does not, and having had bad experiences with 'upgrade' installations, and a vague faith in the possiblity of fixing stupid stuff without "reinstall windows", I hope to find a proper solution.
Well you could also try other setups: xf86config, xfine, xfine2, xf86cfg and XF86Setup
Thanks for the suggestions thus far though.`
