In fact, the error message implied something like that. But I have no idea what other process might have been using the driver.
Probably a sound daemon, i.e. artsd, esd or some such. You then should use that as 'audio output' in mplayer, see 'mplayer -ao help'.

Thank you. That looks very helpful. I've run through the list of drivers, with the command: mplayer -ao <drivername> <filename> with complete silence. Interestingly, there were no error messages as there were when I was running MPlayer through its GUI. I wonder if the error is an artifact of the GUI in combination with some peculiarity of the clip, although that doesn't seem likely. In answer to Patrick's question, no I do not have other clips. I use MPlayer for DVD movies (where I am overjoyed with MPlayer's performance), and am not looking for clips; someone sent me this one unbidden. I'm prepared to let this matter lie as it is, since it has no effect on my normal use of the application. It would have been nice to know why this clip doesn't behave as it should, but there is a limit to everything. Thanks to both of you, and to others who offered suggestions. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
