does anyone have an idea what the conf.modules entry might be for a 3com589d pcmcia ethernet adapter?
No need for specifying this kind of hardware in /etc/conf.modules. To use PCMCIA, install package pcmcia.rpm and set the variable PCMCIA in /etc/rc.config to "i82365" (almost all systems use this chipset). After booting, the cardmanager starts. This program can be considered as another kernel daemon which handles PCMCIA cards only. As soon as the cardmanager recognizes that there is a card in the slot, it asks the card for it's identification. Using this "name" the cardmanager parses /etc/pcmcia/config in order to determine which module needs to be loaded. If you need any special options for these modules, specify them in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts. But a 3c589 should work out of the box.
