Yes, but you should try to fix this by changing Contrast and Luminance, not by Gamma.
If it looks better with a different gamma, the monitor electronics might be bad, in that case a different gamma setting is ok.
If you connect the ViewSonic using the digital cable you lose the ability to change Contrast/Brightness and any Manual Adjustments to the image size/position; only connecting using the analog connection can one get these controls back. The only way to control the monitor when using digital, therefore, is thru the software - in this case playing around with the gamma setting in Personal Settings (in Suse).
