Uah! I uncovered a wasp nest, as we say in Italy! I don't identify 3D with 3dfx, as well as I don't identify linux with SuSE or PC with IBM or wemen with Pamela Andersson; I said only that the only thing that need outstanding computing power nowadays is 3D gaming, and one interested in it shouldn't change its CPU, but buying a 3D card, FOR INSTANCE a Voodoo 2. About TNT, well... it's great, I know, so what? 3dfx is good, too, you can't deny it, and G200 is, and S3 savage is... I dont' want to take a position, I just have a voodoo 2 and it works fine. Stop. I have a Matrox Millennium G200 and a Voodoo 2, and I don't pretend to have the heaven's keys, I was only speaking about games, and, you know, many games still support ONLY Glide, which is a proprietary library of 3dfx... I hope to have clarified my position... No need to start polemics, Pedro :), everyone is happy with what he has, and I don't exclude that in future I could buy a TNT2... Re-entering in topic, however, I don't see actually any advantage in having a 3D accelerated card in Linux... what could be its use? Someone improves his work having one? I'm curious... Is it possible to accelerate, let's say, Blender or POVRay with one? that really need a better CPU are 3D games, and they works much better buying a 3dfx card...
This is kind of off-topic, but 3dfx is currently far from the "king" of 3D acceleration. The Riva TNT card is much better than the Voodoo 2, while the upcoming TNT 2 completely out-performs the upcoming Voodoo 3. XFree86 already has support for the TNT (since 3.3.3), too. If you want to know how and why... any 3D site will tell you.
I just had to say this because it saddens me that so many people equal 3D with 3dfx. It's the same as thinking that "computers = MS Windows". :((( -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
