I have just got a new machine and am testing it to be sure everything works before I transfer all my work onto it. So far, I have one annoying problem - I can't make samba connections over my LAN, which means that I can't easily transfer downloaded files to the new PC. The old PC is running SuSE 8.2 (as is the new one) and is the gateway machine for the LAN. I know everything is working fine on this machine WRT Samba because I can connect to it from a third machine and can connect to shares on that third machine from the old PC (the third machine is running RISC OS, so config details don't just transfer). However, I can't make a samba connection using the new PC - I can ping the old PC and even log in using ssh, but Samba barfs. I've tried using LinNeighborhood (which I usually use because it's easier :-) but even smbmount is failing. The symptoms are as follows. LinNeighborhood lists only an ADMIN% share for the old PC instead of the two users' home directories (I am running nmb on the old PC). Mounting this as root fails as follows: SMB connection failed 4415: session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw Using smbmount //linux.at.home/john /home/john/PC -o username=john,ip=192.168.0.100 gives a similar error with more detail: SMB connection failed 4416: session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid) SMB connection failed Now, the uid and pw are fine and, as I said, I can log in from a third machine. Why, then, can I not log in from the new PC? I've configured lmhosts to contain the old PC's ip address, and the network is fine. I'm baffled!
