I think the problem of root filling up with snapshots is the fault of snapper (an openSUSE program), not btrfs, even though the snapshotting capability is provided by btrfs. Please don't blame btrfs for problems not of its making. When you create the / partition at installation time, YaST offers an option to use snapshots, which you can decline if you want to. ISTR it defaults to 'yes' so you have enter the partitioning dialog to do this. Having said that, I understand that the default settings for snapper have improved in Leap 42.3.
