I need a file (/usr/bin/ginstall in this case). How can I find which package I need to install from the distribution discs.
mount SuSE cd#1 and cd to it. zcat ARCHIVES.gz | grep '/usr/bin/ginstall'
rpm on knows about those *already* installed, doesn't it?
I'll jump in before Volker here and suggest his program 'susegrep', found on his website at: http://volker.orcon.net.nz/soft/susegrep
Unfortunately there's no official way. SuSE really should create an index compatible with susegrep and place it on their server, for each version etc.
Why? If they just document the method I use, it would not be neccessary. This has worked at least since SuSE 5.3.
That is true, but there are still a number of advantages to susegrep: 1) It will work without having to mount the CD every time (ignoring the fact that you could copy ARCHIVES.gz to the hard drive). 2) You can get it to do some MD5 sum checking automatically. 3) And most important of all... it's easier for less experienced users to use as it has its options clearly documented. It also 'looks nicer' compared to zcat'ing and piping through grep and getting what could be complicated looking output - it outputs in a very nice format, which is sometimes important for new users. Anyway, it just depends on who you are and what you want ;-) Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
