Try installing a package from here[1]. After installation, kill kwin_x11 and start the new one from a shell or krunner.

AFAICT the update kwin_x11 seems to have stopped the system-wide freezes that I was experiencing before.
Spoke too soon. :-( It just happened again, after I'd started playing some music (which I hadn't tried in the couple of days since applying the patch). Lasted about 10 seconds. So, that brings mpd, pulseaudio and alsa into the mix...
