I think the dummy0 device is needed when using PPP. That does not tell me much about its purpose. I would have to connect and double check to make sure, but I think I have a machine without `dummy0', and have no problem using PPP with it. I think I have two `lo' instead.
Try to set /etc/rc.config:SETUPDUMMYDEV=no. I succeeded to run Samba only after I've done this. Thanks for the tip. Still, why `dummy' is needed, separate from `lo', is a mystery. Could it be wholly removed from Linux? If not, why? Isn't dummy0 a "bit-bucket" for when you are offline with a non-permanent PPP interface so that certain programs can still run if they check for the IP address of your PPP connection?
