You can reinstall grub by doing the following: 1) boot the install cd and select installation 2) when you get to the language screen, do alt+cntrl+f5 (takes you to a text screen) 3) mount /dev/hdax /mnt (where x is the number of the root partition)
Minor change for the newbies like me: mount /dev/sdax /mnt. At least that's what worked for me. :)
4) mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev 5) mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc 6) chroot /mnt 7) grub-install /dev/hda 8) exit 9) reboot
First thing I ran into was an error: /dev/hda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive. Googling that, told me to run: # grub-install --recheck /dev/sda This ran about a minute then I got the message, "The file /boot/grub/stage1 does not read correctly." Googling that found a bunch of answers which lead me to believe I need to give up and just reinstall. :P It will take less time to restore my files that way. (I did - of course - back up recently.)
