It would appear that on Sep 12, Jos van Kan did say:
I upgraded to 11.3 and apart from some minor quirks (disable pulseaudio to get sound, add nomodeset boot parameter to get anything at all) which incidentally may be absolute showstoppers to the uninitiated, I am left with a problem that I haven't been able to solve so far.
Hmmmnnn nomodeset??? Perchance are you using an Nvidia card??? I ask because I recently acquired a desktop with an integrated Nvidia card that absolutely hates the new open source "nouveau" driver... On least one of my installed Linux distributions I had to start with nomodeset to avoid getting a totally blank screen even on a runlevel 3 startup. (Though blindly typing my root login sequence followed by shutdown -h now got the 'puter to shutdown cleanly) so Linux was running but I was having an extreme graphics problem that apparently was caused because KMS would start nouveau even when I wasn't running X. Using nomodeset however caused many things to run poorly. My problem was solved by switching to one of the proprietary Nvidia drivers...
