I am guessing, since it is a writer, it is scsi emulated, and you have a link /dev/cdrecorder --> /dev/sr0. If you do, then make a link for cdrom and dvd, i.e. "ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd" and "ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom". If you writer is not /dev/sr0, then make sure you have a link dvd pointing to the right device.
