Ouch! That is what I would call a broken monitor.
The only way to control the monitor when using digital, therefore, is thru the software - in this case playing around with the gamma setting in Personal Settings (in Suse).
You won't control the monitor this way, only the final output table of the graphics hardware. BTW - both 100% white and 100% black will remain exactly the same if you change gamma. So the monitor will continue to shine as bright as before when you're using a white background like in terminal windows.
