I have just experienced the same as you, and at first glance it seems to have something to do with where the boot loader is placed, when it's on a dual boot system. I have set up a dual boot computer (SuSE 8.2 for production + SuSE 9.0 for a test swing). I bet this resembles your setup with Win XP and SuSE 9.0.
I got a dual boot Win XP and SuSE 9.0 here without any problems.
Suggest, that you guys use GRUB as a general boot loader, and install it on the primary hard drive, and then configure it to boot your windows. Actually, suse does this automatically when installing, unless you tell it otherwise.
Besides me, I have a Compaq nx9010 with SuSE 9.0 installed fine, and bootsplash shows fine as well. The graphics mode, is vga=0x317 for a vesa 1024x768 display.
And finally, you can always install grub on your mbr, by simply running 'grub-install /dev/hda' or wherever you want it.
Now, when, during the install, I choose to put the test system's boot loader on a floppy, the test system's boot splash comes up fine, no matter whether I boot the test system from the floppy or directly from my production system's boot loader. However, when, during install, I choose to put the test system's boot loader in the boot sector of the test system's partition, the boot splash does not show, no matter whether I boot the test system directly from my production system's bootlader or by chain loading the test system's boot loader from the production system's boot loader.
As far as I can see, the difference between the two types of install, is where I put the boot loader for the test system.
Does this give you any ideas?

Hey guys @ Örn: I did change from LILO to GRUB after seeing Johnnys working config, so that's what I'm using now. And GRUB is installed in MBR on /dev/hda. @ Johnny: It seems to be the same problem you've got on you test-setup as I have here. But it gives me no ideas as to a possible solution :( Thanks for your help both of you, but I guess I'll just have to boot without a pretty background ;) Kasper
