You have to run the nvidia installer with --uninstall before installing the packages and remove the packages before installing via the installer.
I kind of felt that was the case after I re-installed the suse rpms. I know the proper order is think, then do. Knowing is one thing... I will try again. I bet with my luck installing the suse stuff in between will have done bad evil things...
