Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you need kernel 2.4 for XFree86 4.0.x DRI acceleration. Otherwise, you need to downgrade to XFree86 3.3.6 and use glide/mesa3dfx.
I am using XFree86 4.02 with kernel Suse 2.2.16 with Matrox G400 Dual head and I have DRI enabled even with 32 bpp -- Togan Muftuoglu
