SW1 management is only via a Windows app (TP Link Easy Smart).

I recovered SW2, it was the default password, admin/admin. That's why it was not saved in my password store, because I had not changed it. Done. Yiks. Still I can not do pings from inside SW2. It does have a web page. I do not see anything relevant. Maybe the mask, which was 255.255.255.0, now changed to 255.255.0.0, but makes no difference. Model is TP Link TL-SG1016DE I will have to check firmware upgrades.
