[SLE] XFree86-3.3.5

I just installed XFree86 3.3.5 off the FTP site, apparently with no problems, just did rpm -Uvh *.rpm on the needed packages, and then ran SuSEconfig. When I tried to run x again using "startx" all I got was an infinitely scrolling line of "Password:". Anyone have any idea what this means, or what can be done about it. Is there another way I should go about installing new versions of X, should I use yast instead, etc?
