Looks like the button tries to call gimp-remote which first looked if there is an already running instance of GIMP and if so, use that to open the image.
This wrapper is no longer needed in recent GIMP versions, the gimp command itself does this job. So you can edit the button properties and just replace 'gimp-remote' with 'gimp'
