Well that is the point. alsa or alsadev rpms seem to create asound.conf. But the file remains empty. if I am correct alsactl can create asound.conf sound card setup. alsactl though needs the mixer to do this hence it doesn;t work. bash-2.04# alsactl store alsactl: MIXER open error: Invalid argument so the mixer is fucked. hence i can't use alsactl to create a nice asound.conf file. besides that asound.conf is not needed anyway. I should be able to unmute the card with alsamixer. but alsamixer doesn't work because the mixer is fucked. which brings us back to the fact that the mixer is fucked whichever way we look at it. there is in itself nothing wrong with alsa. the modules load. there seems to be some bug caused by god knows what which doesn't make the mixer act and hence 'die ganze sache ist fuer die katze'. mk

file /etc/asound.conf is removed as it was empty anyhow.
You need to create the file. It can't be empty. Mine is close to two pages long. From the looks of it most of that stuff is mixer related. That's with a 1370 but I doubt it's much different with the 1371. What happens when you run alsactl ?
