I tried this on Tumbleweed, it may or may not be a Suse or`even a Linux issue.
For USB tethering there is a switch to turn ON, once ON the comnputer is supposed to recognize it and net browsing may begin (the way I understand it no other action being required). I don't know if NetworkManager would show the usb cable or what?
NetworkManager will see a new network interface. What it will do depends on the interface type. For wired interfaces NM normally tries to autoconfigure them.
Does a new interface appear when you activate tethering?
No. It's my first smartphone. If I try to 'add' a new connection in NetworkManager I don't know what connection type to select, USB via a phone isn't really wired and it isn't really wifi either.
That is not what I asked.
Yous aksed if a new interface appeared, I answered with no.
Same result if booted into Slowroll but if I try it under Artix (also set up with Plasma and NM) it works and shows up as a 'wired connection' or 'wired-connection-2' if ethernet is already plugged in.
So it sounds like some drivers are missing. You could start with rebooting, connecting your smartphone and providing the dull output of dmesg command. Upload to https://paste.opensuse.org/
https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/2589d6558c09 The Android thing seems to be recognized, it would have to be in order to allow file manager transfers (which it does) but that's it. In Artix it coughs up what looks like a driver "cdc_ether" https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/526e0d5b68c4 but searching for that with Yast in TW points only to the default kernel (as 'provider' package)
It shows nothing, and there is NO internet given to the computer (wifi hotspotting DOES work).
However, when I next turn the USB Thethering switch OFF then I get a popup asking if I want to allow the phone to share data with the computer. Clicking yes opens a file manager & data transfer becomes possible.
The first procedure is documented but doesn't work, the second one isn't but does.
Any ideas?
