Ok thanks - I'll see if I can get the issue onto the list properly - it's really strange..... Carl. On 11/3/05, David Walton <david.walton@prodigy.net> wrote:
I found your original post via Google, and there wasn't an option to post back to the list.
I recorded several LP's using Krecord and definately got both channels. I started qamix, and then Krecord. Previously I had run "alsaconf" from the root prompt and used that utility to re-initialize the sound card. I think that it messed up my X settings, because now I have to run it during any session that I want sound. But qamix seems to have done the trick. I didn't have this problem with Suse 9.1. Only 10.0 seems to have the issue.

Ok had a try - had a fiddle with the check-boxes and used krecord - it might be me, but I'm thinking that it sounded like krecord 'realised' only one channel was playing, and recorded that on both channels?
I used Myth and audacity and both only recorded the left hand channel - so not sure it's a cure...?
Carl.
PS: any idea how to show this conversation on the suse lists - in case other people want to get the information and try it out?

Carl,
I think I found the solution.
I installed QAMIX (which is on the Suse 10.0 distribution DVD) and ran that instead of KMIX.
On
the mixer window, there's a couple of check boxes over "capture" and I unchecked the "mix" box. Then I was able to record both channels with Krecord and see both channels on the meter.
To install, I searched for QAMIX in Yaast and it told me to insert the 10.0 disk in the drive to install. That was it.

Hi,
Glad to see that I'm not the only one seeing
(and that I'm not going mad!)
Yes, I've already tried using different recording programs - as mentioned I actually spotted this problem originally as I use MythTV as a PVR, and spotted the problem - I used audacity to confirm it was the OS and not Myth.
I havn't tried to change to OSS - but I did
re-install the audio card through Yast. Interesting that I'm using a Turtle Beach Montego II, and this doesn't appear on the list and isn't automatically recognised.....
At the moment, I've reverted back to the
9.3. - Must admit, I'm fairly new to the suse web lists, and I've not been able to post back some of the conversations that I've had with other
on the subject - that may at least spark more interest as a recognised problem..... have you any ideas how to do it?
Thanks
Carl.

Did you ever find a solution to this

having exactly the same problem with Suse 10.0. The problem did not occur with Suse 9.1, nor does it occur when running Knoppix from a CD.
Things to try: switching sound driver to OSS (if I can figure out how to do it). Trying a different sound recording program. (Audacity has too many reported problems with Suse 10, though.) Trying a different mixer program.
