If what is /dev/sda in OS is indeed hd0 in grub it perfectly explains why partition 5 is not found during boot ...
Picking up on this observation, I altered the grub boot line to (hd1,4), and lo and behold, it booted. So I think I am in business! Grub was looking at the wrong disk. Thanks to one and all.
