Everything was the same except for the PC. That's why I decided my problem was either hardware or a driver issue.
Hardware problems don't sound right because I don't experience any of these symptoms in 'that other operating system'. Must be something causing the hotplugging services to freeze.
I had no obvious problems in Windows either. Which is why I suspect it's not so much faulty hardware as poorly supported/nonstandard hardware. Although the new PC is (obviously) newer than the old one, everything works perfectly now! I know it's not a lot of consolation, but it *should* work fine, so it's either a hardware fault (unlikely, as you say) or drivers. Perhaps you could try the latest version of the USB stack and drivers?
